Like all woodworkers it seems that there is always some other tool or machine that "I must have" but the reality is that experience, patience and attention to detail are probably the most important tools I use on a daily basis. For many years I was limited in what I could create mostly due to lack of training. Perhaps the most valuable experience I had was a winter spent working in a fine cabinet shop in South Carolina. It was in that environment that I learned many of the basics that I should have learned early-on; simple sounding things like how to measure, what is square, how to draw a line, how to sharpen tools and blades, how to mill lumber and finishing techniques.
