Finished Rocking Chair Photos
The chairs shown on this page are I feel a good cross section and representation of my work and I've tried to show as many wood species as practical. I've made almost170 chairs over the past twenty years and while I've used dozens of species of wood over the years, I would have to say that the three most popular woods I build with are Curly Maple, English Walnut, and Claro Walnut.
People come in many different shapes and sizes. Extra tall, extra short and heavy individuals have an exceedingly difficult time finding seating that fits them. In many cases they don't even think to wonder if there is specialized seating out there. This has gotten to be a specialty of mine; creating comfortable seating for the tall, the short, plus sizes, and the extra large. I am constantly striving to find the most interesting and highly figured woods available. If you have a particular favorite wood or want something that no one else has, give me a call to discuss. I have specialty wood dealers in various places around the country that have some truly incredible stock. I construct both the back braces and the rockers using multiple layers of slender laminate strips that are cut from particularly attractive boards. This offers several benefits including the ability to match the face and rear of each back brace and the rockers from side to side. Laminates are also stronger than solid pieces of wood of the same dimension. Throughout I use a grinder to shape various components and to transition from one into another. This is done by eye and and results in uniqueness from one chair to another. The adhesives and joinery techniques I employ throughout are all time tested and ensure that each chair I make will remain a solid family heirloom that will be passed down for many years from the original construction date. |
